I had planned this move for over a year, and finally did a few weeks ago.
I had been living in Medellin for about 3 years in a pretty nice, but hilly, neighborhood (Castropol). So every day I had to climb down a bit to a not so pretty, but flat, neighborhood (Colombia). And then I [...]

Time for a better training plan
October 5th, 2008 · No Comments · Running
Without realizing it, I have been sinking little by little into the over-training mistake. Thinking that if I don’t feel exquisitely exhausted after each work out, then I’m wasting my time, and getting farther from doing a marathon performance that my ego would get satisfied with, in this oh so little time I have left [...]

Medellin Half-Marathon: Still over 2 hours
September 15th, 2008 · No Comments · Running
2:00:29 secs to be more precise. I did want to give the extra effort at the end to break the 2 hours barrier, but I just couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t breathe for the last 5 K. My legs felt good, the shin-splint aches I was having before didn’t bother at all, but it looks like [...]

Shin splints and website to track your training

The doctor confirmed my fears. I’ve got shin splints on my left shin bone, with a little edema on the lower part. I had that two years ago on the other leg, which kinda burst badly on a half-marathon, resulting in a three month incapacity. This time it doesn’t hurt that much, and I still [...]

Bad Sunday
July 27th, 2008 · No Comments · Running
After the last 10K’s great performance I had high hopes for today’s half marathon. 45k runners, all released in two different (but tiny) streets, except for the elites that started like three blocks ahead. Big mess. And it starts at 10am, which will give you a nice “bronceado sabanero” (nasty high altitude insolation) later on [...]

46 mins 10K

Yesterday’s 10K was fantastic. It poured hard earlier at dawn, so the weather was cool, perfect for the race. The start whistle caught me off guard, so I had to step out to try turning on the pedometer, but I was so stressed I couldn’t even manage to turn on the darn thing. So no [...]

I’ll be running this tomorrow, a new race event my gym has organized. The first part till “vegas” is generally a bit uphilly, but just a little. The second part uses the “Avenida los industriales”, also used in the Half Marathon, but the other way. I’ll be updating tomorrow with the altitude profile.
UPDATE: Here’s the [...]

Proper Running Form: 1) run proud 2) short strides 3) hip pull

I promise this blog won’t become just a stack of links to other content like so many out there, but I just have to share this. I’ve never been too sure about my running technique, and I haven’t had someone to correct me. But I just followed these 3 simple tips, and it has definitely [...]

I’m gonna let a Kenyan win the Cali marathon
May 26th, 2008 · No Comments · Running
I experienced today what felt like shin splints, but in the thigh. I was trying to make up for the long run I’ll miss next Sunday when I’ll be traveling with my sister to Machu Picchu. Bad idea. It didn’t hurt much, but I know how can it can get worse very fast. So I’m [...]

I’m gonna let a Kenyan win the NYC marathon
May 14th, 2008 · No Comments · Running
I didn’t make it in the lottery, and there’s no way I could raise 3k in charity to have a guaranteed entrance :(
But I just learned there’s a marathon in Cali (Colombia) around the same date, and I’ve always wanted to go to Cali, so problem solved, for 10 times less the price :)
